Of all the streets in Zagreb, Ilica is the one which the locals hold dearest. Six kilometers in length, it was for a long time the longest street in the city, although some of the newer multi-lane avenues are now longer. However Ilica remains the symbolic main artery of the city, with highstreet shops and government buildings lining its eastern end, theatres and markets (and even Zagreb’s first brewery) emerging as it moves west. It is also one of the rare streets that has kept the same name since its origins in the 15th century. Because of its east-west direction it is famous for the bright sunlight that hits you as you walk westward in the late afternoon.
